The master displays the transformation of the metal sculptural form through the metaphor of the birth of a butterfly. The living organism, pulsing inside the steel massif, tends to break out. The folds of steel resembling the embroidered shell pass into a streamlined form, mesmerizingly iridescent. In Chrysalis, the sculptor applies a whole range of metal processing techniques. Brutality of a steel block contrasts with swiftness of a Damascus steel and nickel pattern.
The image of the butterfly cocoon is embedded in the motif of spinning common for many works by Dmitry Zhukov. The Chrysalis is a Bombyx mori cocoon, stable in its integrity, but consisting of hundreds of silk threads.
